Tams take home second runner-up honors

Far Eastern University had some form of consolation, winning the battle for third against Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 70-69, on June 13 in the Nike Summer League seniors division at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Reil Cervantes dropped the leather to Hippolyte Nounduo for a layup and a five-point lead, 69-64, :33.8 to go. The Knights had a chance to salvage the game but Kevin Alas' attempt from left quarter court missed as Jam Cortes scored on a putback for the final tally, .5 of a tick remaining.

With the victory, the Tams averted what could have been an NCAA 1-2-3 finish.

The Cameroonian import led the Tamaraws with 19 points and six rebounds, while Paul Sanga scored ten. Cervantes finished with six points and nine boards.

Mythical Team member Reymar Gutilban headed the Knights with 19 points with Rey Guevarra notching 15. Cortes had a double-double with 14 markers and 11 rebounds.

FEU went home with medals and P75,000 cash prize.

Far Eastern had mini-breakaways but this was quickly negated by the Knights. JR Cawaling and Sanga scored threes to give FEU an eight-point cushion, 55-47, to start the final quarter.

Letran temporarily held the upperhand with a Cortes offensive board, 58-56, with exactly seven minutes to go. From there, the blue and red squad never trailed by more than five but bungled freethrows made it hard for them to make an effective comeback.
